Positive Verbal Reinforcement

Positive verbal reinforcement is an important component of basic instruction for teaching. Teachers often over look this important component because they hear the pleasant tone that they address their students with and overlook the content within that pleasant tone.
I have recently heard teachers using sweet voices to say, “This is too hard for you. This is going to be hard. This is going to be tricky. This is not how we learned it. This is tough.”
One negative statement leaves a long lasting impression on a student. But, positive statements are forgot easily therefore needs to be received 10 time more often then a negative statement to make a positive memorable impression on a student.

  1. Positive reinforcement is essential for students to thrive in a classroom. Our students are developing their identities and one negative comment could last a lifetime. It is important to instill a sense of trust and respect from day one. Students should feel a sense of safety, security, and hopeful optimism regarding school. Without that, how can we expect them to achieve high expectations?

  2. Agreed Anita! I think positive reinforcement is key to student success. My brother was torn apart verbally by his third grade teacher. The negative comments he heard make him believe to this day that he is a bad reader even though he's not. There is mighty power in words. Words have the power to break and tear down or build up and empower someone. As teachers, it is so important that we understand this and choose the words we use wisely. And it is amazing how far a positive comment can go!
